ABOUT Prayaas?
With the objective to unlock the potential of India’s youth, Udhyam Learning Foundation (Udhyam) organized ‘Prayaas – Young Minds, New Possibilities’ an invite-only conference held on January 31 in New Delhi. Prayaas aimed to stimulate a cohesive and collective understanding of the current issues and instil a sense of urgency towards building new pathways for the youth of our country. The event was supported by YuWaah and Amazon.
Attending the event were change-makers, practitioners and leaders from over 120 of India’s top organisations including The Nudge Institute, Magic Bus, J-PAL, Tech Mahindra Foundation, STIR education, Nalanda Way, India Literacy Project, Dream-A-Dream, Kshamtalaya, Aflatoun, ACT grants, IndusAction, Michael & Susan Dell Foundation, Omidyar, Veddis, Urban Company, Harappa, Sattva, Commutiny, LabourNet, Dalberg, Meghshala, Amazon, Head Held High, The Education Alliance, Reap Benefit, Kaivalya Education Foundation, StateStreet, Delhi government school students, teachers and other independent people passionate about youth.
Why Prayaas?
The sheer scale of the skills and employability crisis in India warrants a tectonic shift in how the problem is being addressed. 39% of employers say a skills shortage is the leading reason for vacancies in organisations. A large section of our graduates fail to match industry expectations. The current employability rate is at a mere 15% due to the gap between existent skill sets and required skill sets.
Whilst India is rapidly transitioning into a powerful economy, our education system still hovers around traditional methods of teaching where the onus is given to ‘scoring marks’ or taking ‘good grades’ than the practical skills which make them employable. There is very little/no employer-academic institution interaction. Mostly the education system is theoretical & lacks adequate life and career skills required for students to excel in their personal & professional lives.
Prayaas is an attempt to bring educationists, researchers, decision makers, policy influencers, civil society members and corporates on to a single platform to cohesively understand and debate on the current issues that can be problem solved by everyone to generate more strategic and action oriented steps.
